Bug Description

Many calendar tools like http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/ export their data as iCal XML. Importing that would be great!

I don't understand. iCal data are for events and I don't see how you match that with a todo list.

I'm highly interested because there's probably a relation between calendar and todo list but I don't see what kind of relation exactly.

Anyway, this is also related with our "backends" as there will be "import" backend.

If I have a iCal calendar with events, I want to import them into GTG as tasks with the event name as the title of the task, and then structure/arrange them in GTG and add details to the body of the tasks...

iCal files can also store tasks, but generally in the form of a simple
todo list.

Hmm, I see what you mean I guess. It is not clear for me as well, though.

Marking this bug as confirmed since an ical backend would be a must have. No particular release date, though.

[Setting as wishlist since from the discussion this sounds like more of a new feature request for a new backend than an issue with how gtg operates currently]

Just thinking…

If there is a possibility for exporting / importing ics/ical, it will solve the following blueprints also:

https://blueprints.launchpad.net/gtg/+spec/web-synchronisation/
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/gtg/+spec/lightning

I'm not sure but maybe its enough to add a new template to the export-plugin by Luca Invernizzi?

And of course adding the possibility to import the ical again ;-) …

Maybe it's possible to get this above the xcal-format?

Hm… I'm afraid I have no idea of python and hopefully some of the gtg developers will be develop this faster than I'm learning ;-)

I have noticed that other online task managers export or sync their tasks as ical (ie events). These tasks are synced with Google as an 'other' calendar. Is this because gtasks isn't up to the task? (Sorry for the pun!) In any case two examples of this are:

Zoho Projects (Links to tasks in calendars are provided in both ical and gcal) These can be then also linked to evolution calendar

Wrike.com Pure task manager, has export to ical, rss, and excel.

So if gtgnome could provide either a sync to google tasks (Other wishlist for this exists) or even sync its tasks to a calendar like zoho, this would be awesome!
