Grub2 cannot save changes

Bug Description
Tried to remove old kernels and received the following error message:

Syntax errors are detected in generated GRUB config file.
Ensure that there are no errors in /etc/default/grub
and /etc/grub.d/* files or please file a bug report with
/boot/grub/

Tried a different approach. Removed the two oldest kernels using Synaptic and then checked the results with Grub2 GUI. When opening the file, the kernels were removed but Grub2 crashed without even saving. It generated and sent an error report. The OS is Ubuntu 12.04.
