This problem occurs with all icon themes present in ubuntu 11.10 by default, only manually added Faenza icon theme works as supposed.

You can reproduce this problem by turning wireless connection off.

Network-manager-applet seems to use "nm-no-connection" icon (http://git.gnome.org/browse/network-manager-applet/tree/src/applet.c, in foo_client_state_changed_cb function), this icon is present in both Humanity and Ubuntu-Mono.

Does gnome-shell use its own notifications?
