Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-shell

I installed gnome-shell and gnome-themes-standard via the gnome3 ppa [1] and it's fantastic, really good!
There's only one problem, I face with gnome-shell on amd64 and i386. There are no umlauts in several gnome applications, e.g. gnome-terminal and all dialoges of update-manager and gedit.

In the terminal, a "ß" is replaced by "ss" and all other German umlauts are replaced by "?". If I want to update my Ubuntu, the update-manager shows me the button "Pr?fen" (German word for "Check").
In Firefox, Eclipse and Empathy, all umlauts are working.
I tried updating the language settings, but all are correctly installed.

Here are the technical information:

Description: Ubuntu 11.04
Release: 11.04

gnome-shell:
  Installiert: 3.0.2-0ubuntu1~build1
  Kandidat: 3.0.2-0ubuntu1~build1
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 3.0.2-0ubuntu1~build1 0
        500 http://ppa.launchpad.net/gnome3-team/gnome3/ubuntu/ natty/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I thought this is just a small error, but as it occurs on amd64 and i386, I think it's severe.

Please do not file bugs about versions from PPAs, especially unstable ones. They are officially unsupported.

Could you verify if this issue still persists in Oneiric?

I'm sorry I posted it here. I've got one question: Where should I post it either way?

Back to topic: On i386 the bug does not occur anymore, on amd64, it still persists...
I haven't tested it on Oneiric.

There seems to be no way to link this bug only with the PPA you used and not the official Ubuntu package so perhaps it is best if you post it in the GNOME bugzilla:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/

To contact the GNOME3 team whom are maintaining that PPA:
<email address hidden>

For now I think it's best to leave this as Incomplete pending someone testing this in the official Oneiric package.

https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3 clearly says "For questions and bugs with software in this PPA please contact GNOME3 Team." and not "File a bug report upstream". I'd prefer if downstream developers first clearly say "This is an upstream issue" instead of spending time closing Ubuntu-only reports as NOTGNOME/INVALID.

Actually, it seems we should tag it "gnome3", and subscribe the gnome3 team.

There are several issues with gdm3 in Ubuntu, one of which has to do with the locale. Please try using a different login screen: lightdm is currently the default for 11.10. Also, the correct way to fix Gnome 3 PPA bugs now is to fix them in Oneiric since the Oneiric packages are getting downsynced to the PPA.

So, please check to see if this is still an issue in Oneiric. Note that Oneiric still has gdm 2 in the repositories; gdm 3 has not been packaged good enough to go in yet.
