Bug Description

Ubuntu 10.10 64bit.
Hardware: i3-350m, ati radeon hd 5470

Ubuntu battery indicator cannot estimate time to charge the battery when charging. Disconnecting the battery causes it to say the battery is charged despite it is not. Turning the computer on without the adapter plugged in results in the message that it is estimating time remaining.

When turning the computer on with the adapter plugged in:

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: charging
present rate: unknown
remaining capacity: 1790 mAh
present voltage: unknown

cat /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/ADP1/state
state: on-line

 After disconnecting the adapter:

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: charged
present rate: unknown
remaining capacity: 1875 mAh
present voltage: unknown

cat /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/ADP1/state
state: off-line

When turning the computer on without the adapter plugged in:

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: discharging
present rate: unknown
remaining capacity: 1704 mAh
present voltage: unknown

cat /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/ADP1/state
state: off-line

 After plugging the adapter in:

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state
present: yes
capacity state: ok
charging state: discharging
present rate: unknown
remaining capacity: 1576 mAh
present voltage: unknown

cat /proc/acpi/ac_adapter/ADP1/state
state: off-line

cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info gives following output

present: yes
design capacity: 4400 mAh
last full capacity: 4262 mAh
battery technology: non-rechargeable
design voltage: 10880 mV
design capacity warning: 512 mAh
design capacity low: 299 mAh
cycle count: 0
capacity granularity 1: 100 mAh
capacity granularity 2: 100 mAh
model number:
serial number:
battery type: LiOn
OEM info: HP

It seams that acpi doesn't return the present rate of charge/discharge so the system can't estimate remaining time to charge/discharge, and the adapter doesn't change its status until reboot when connected after discharging unless the computer was booted while it was already plugged in.

Are you sure this is a duplicate of #560728 ? The bios vendors aren't the same, and its the acpi that doesn't return all thats needed.

Hello
Concerning this bug and bug 661768,
They are fixed by updating the bios to the official bios F.35 A
BUT BE AWARE, updating it to that bios (at least my model) MIGHT disable your laptop (and will make you need to replace the motherboard), as it did mine. And by disable, i mean it disabled my graphics cards, but i could still test the battery and keys which worked.
Also, i found a guy on ubuntu forums with a different model but the exact same motherboard that successfully updated his bios and found the battery and the keys to be working.

In customer support they told me that HP is aware of this so i'm surprised why they haven't removed the download link for the bios for the model from their site.
They told me to wait for the next version of that bios which will hopefully fix this.

I have this bug on my G62-b13SA and have upgraded the BIOS to F.46 but the problem persists. That said, in Win 7 I don't get any estimate of how long is left either which suggests it may be a hardware issue on the laptop itself

Well ive tried updating to F.46 but i still get no brightness so i didn't even check the battery. I dont get it really.

Upgrading to F.46 didn't solve anything on our G62-B20S0. I doubt that this is a dupe of bug #410604.

I will try if possible to check battery status with W7. I have another disk I can switch to that has W7.

This is definitely not a duplicate of 410604. The percentage charge reports fine although the capacity figures vary each time I boot up. The time remaining can't calculate as the charge / discharge rate is not reported for some reason in this bug. Completely different to the 'duplicate' case

Hello I have an HP G62 B07 SL and persist same problem, but i resolv the problem with the script below.

#!/bin/bash

rima=`cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state|grep "remaining capacity"|awk '{print $3}'`
full=`cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info|grep "last full capacity"|awk '{print $4}'`

perc=$((echo scale=4;echo $rima/$full*100)|bc)
notify-send -i /home/marco/Dropbox/icone/Battery.png "Carica batteria "$perc"%"

This Script calculates the % remaing and with notify send show on desktop the result. This script work in charge state and in discharge state.

now i will try to estimate the time remaing,

I've never had a problem with percentage remaining being available, this really does look like a hardware problem as I don't get a time remaining available in Windows. Interestingly, the HP Support Assistant software can retrieve all the battery information that neither Windows itself or Gnome can - maybe there's some proprietary code tucked away somewhere?

I think the power app is making a guess - ie it's calculating the power when full and working out how much it's using over a period of time rather than any hard ACPI data as would normally be the case, but at least we get a rough idea of the time remaining now which is progress. The underlying problem is still with the hardware which given HP's support of Linux elsewhere is a surprise.
