Waking from hibernate prompts for password when logging in doesn't

This system is configured, under "Login Screen Settings", to log in automatically as me (the sole user on this computer). If the system is booted cleanly no password is required. So I'm imagining this bugreport from the perspective of someone who never needs to enter a password and may not know what to type.

One day they hibernate or suspend their computer, and on returning to it they resume the machine.

Expected behaviour here: (after a pause) their desktop appears
Actual behaviour here: they see a prompt to unlock their session

I couldn't find an existing report of these symptoms but I would argue given the story above that this behaviour is overly surprising and should be seen as a bug.

Not only do I not use a password to log on, I also have the screensaver set to not require a password when interrupted. So it is odd that power management requires one when resuming. To me it seems that the screensaver setting and the logon setting should be one and the same and should match the PM resume behaviour as well. Either you need a password to use the machine (non-su), or you don't! Then there is the keyring password to consider ...

This can also be reproduced on Maverick. On hibernating the system, I can briefly see that the screensaver is activated & locked before the system sleeps. On resume, I'm prompted for a password. This doesn't happen on cold boot.

I've just reviewed the manual for GNOME Power Manager (section “advanced-preferences-locking”). Apparently “there is a complex locking scheme available for power users that allows locking policy to change for the lid, suspend and hibernate actions”.

Perhaps the way to deal with this bug is in the UI for enabling autologin: if automatic login is enabled, configure GNOME Power Manager to use advanced locking preferences.

The problem is that even when setting the variables in gconf-editor such that the password should actually not be required after suspend/hibernate, it IS required. This clearly is a bug. The reason why I did not open a new one is because I believe this one should cover the issue.

Thanks a lot for reporting this to the paper cuts project, however a paper cut must be a small usability flaw that is included in the default Ubuntu installation by design, whereas this is simply a minor bug that is not supposed to be there.

Sorry, cannot comment upstream so I will do that here. The answer is no. I am not asked for a password when resuming from the screensaver, but I am asked for my password when resuming from suspend.
