Thank you for the upstream pointer. No need to open upstream bugs to launchpad though, it's creating extra bug work for the Ubuntu team and is not really useful. It makes sense when there is a patch to backport or if the bug should be worked by the Ubuntu team for the next version though

I'm really sorry about that. I had done a bunch of work to isolate which applet was causing the problem and then quickly wrote up a launchpad bug. I only found the upstream bug 5 minutes after filing this one ("hmm I wonder if it is already upstream. I'll do a search for gtk_widget_size_allocate() -> bugzilla timeout. Hmm better narrow it down to gnome-panel. Ah...") and by then it was too late.

Perhaps it would be nice to have a "tracking upstream" option so needless launchpad bugs like this can be closed straight away.

Sorry.

No problem, I was just pointing it for reference. Launchpad has an option to not list bugs with an upstream task and the bug is not really in the way (though that the bugs list has it by default if you don't change the search options to not list them), that's just that's it doesn't add any real value for the desktop team.

I don't see this in jaunty with compiz; are you running metacity?

I have just tested this using the procedure described in steps to reproduce and this is still here with BOTH compiz and metacity (I do not believe this is a bug in the window manager as it is being reported by gnome-panel). The only difference between using compiz or metactiy seems to be the the size of the dimensions reported (compiz says width -6 and height 24 whereas when using metacity width -5 and height 24 is reported)

Ubuntu jaunty
