Bug Description
panel shadows make sense when they're docked to the top, and they don't impact usability as they only shadow over the title bar. (and bottom panels don't cast any shadows. however, panels docked on the side shadow the entire left side of a maximized app, covering the meat-and-potatoes of your window, so-to-speak. these shadows should be off by default, or provide an option to turn it off. (esp. since more and more apps are moving to no-internal-border designs.
for the record, i think side-mounted panels are important mostly due to netbooks, which are much wider than they are tall.

This does not affect the default Ubuntu experience, which does not use side-docked panels. It is not a paper cut.
