Bug Description

Running Feisty on i386 (Lenovo X60)

I installed gstreamer0.10-gl attempting to fix my video playback (as suggested in bug #98711). Selecting the custom "glimagesink" video output did not work, however (not found).

At any rate, I uninstalled the gstreamer0.10-gl package and now every time I run gstreamer-properties I get this output:

$ gstreamer-properties
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'artsdsink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'pulsesink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'sdlvideosink'
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

I reinstalled all the gstreamer packages I had installed to no avail. I still seem to be able to play videos but it's annoying that I can't experiment with different video plugins now to try to fix the video issue described in the bug above ...

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers.
You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage .

I have classified this bug as a bug in "gstreamer-0.10".

Markus: sorry about the package, I meant to associate this with gstreamer-0.10. Thank you for correcting this.

Sebastien: I have never done a backtrace so I hope the Wiki was good enough to help me through it. The file's attached, if it's not good, let me know and I'll try to redo it.

Using the steps you describe the application doesn't crash on a stock feisty installation. Could you install gnome-media-dbgsym anb get another backtrace?

Here's the new backtrace, with gnome-media-dbgsym installed.

I think I found the problem. The GConf key system->gstreamer->0.10->default->videosink was empty. I set it to "autovideosink" and gstreamer-properties works again!

That's an useful information and enough to trigger the crash

I'm having this same problem. What file did you modify to fix gstreamer-properties?

Open "gconf-editor" and find the key I mentioned above. I set it to "autovideosink" (one of the possible video sinks available) and afterwards gstreamer-properties opens up again and you can choose a different sink. Hope this helps!

Thanx! That did the trick.
I changed this value previously to try to fix some colour issue in Movie Player. It didn't really work so I installed VLC player (which worked fine).
I went back to gstream-properties to clear out that field and was too lazy to put autovideolink bank in and paid for it. Spent hours looking for the configuration file to modify, as gstream-properties would segmentation fault.

Thanx for your help again.

Cheers,
ngp

Update: this bug is still reproducible in Karmic by setting the videosink to an empty string.

I still get the above error messages and I have GConf key system->gstreamer->0.10->default->"autovideosink" (without the quotes).

My webcam

Bus 002 Device 005: ID 046d:089d Logitech, Inc. QuickCam E2500 series

Should work out-of-the-box in Ubuntu 10.10 but the lower half of the video is garbled. I use (64-bit Ubuntu 10.10 [not mythbuntu] )

       LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

When I do the terminal screen is filled with these kinds of error messages:

libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 4 more bits
libv4lconvert: Error decompressing JPEG: fill_nbits error: need 3 more bits

I found this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=830594

And when I try gstreamer-properties, I get the same error messages amd my webcam video still does not work properly. Where can I get these plugins that are not yet installed. I did not find them in the SPM. And will any of them help.

@#13: that's a different bug

The patch on the gnome-bugzilla still has not been implemented to gnome-media as of 12/8/11.

It still happens on precise. I doubt this is getting fixed. I'm tempted to mark it 'won't fix' since gconf and gstreamer-properties are near deprecated now.
