Bug Description

There should be an easy GUI built in to the distro. This will improve usability. Not everyone is happy about editing xorg.conf with some sort of text editor or even using something in terminal.

Video out has been one of the most frustrating issues for me in Linux. A nice guy for adjusting monitor properties such as resolution, color depth, and options such as TV out. Ubuntu is fairly easy to use, but I would love to see someone's mother setup TV out in Linux.

Hi,

I've opened an upstream task for this bug, as I think this should be
discussed with the developers of gnome-display-properties, as it
may well be suitable for that tool to do this. However, I am not
familiar enough with video out and what setting it up entails to file
the enhancement request at GNOME's bugzilla. The upstream
task will serve as a reminder that this needs to be done.

Thanks,

James

Thank you James for taking care of forwarding this upstream. Can you link the upstream report here, or haven't you done this because of a specific reason?

Hi Martin,

I did not forward this bug, I just noted in launchpad that it should be
forwarded. If you are familiar with what features would be desired in a
Video Out GUI then please report a bug on bugzilla.gnome.org and
report the bug number back here.

Thanks,

James

I'm sorry; then I missunderstood you. I am myself not sure about what a Video Out GUI should look like.

Btw: The xorg.conf is becoming smaller and smaller. I think this bug will soon be invalid since less people even have to care about their xorg.conf.

With the current state of Xorg (the current year, 2008) if there is a way for it to auto detect while in X than there won't be a need for it. But back in the day (the year 2005) there probably should be a gui for it. Something like the current Screen Resolution dialog box with a check box for video out. This is bug is really old.

what do you call video out? should a TV be detected as any other screen by xrandr and be configured in the display configuration dialog?

Yes like that. A TV should be detected kind of like any other screen. It should be identified as a TV. It should be detected by xrandr and configured in the display configuration dialog.

Since Jaunty there is now the package "xorg-options-editor-gtk" which let's you edit the xorg.conf with a GUI. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/OptionsEditor for more information. Closing this bug..
