Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnochm

This Gnome CHM reader shows very small fonts by default. It should follow some system setting.

gnochm is written in python and uses the gtkhtml2 python interface, so the issue is in package 'python-gtkhtml2', or the libraries this uses 'libgtkhtml2-0'. The zoom_in(), zoom_out() and zoom_reset() methods that are called on the HTML document object are entirely in these libraries, so this is certainly not an issue in gnochm directly.

One temporary workaround, would be for gnochm for call zoom_in() say 4 times internally, but this is too much of a hack.

The zoom_*() methods are implemented in libgtkhtml2-0, and the gtkhtml libraries does what it's supposed to do, in that HTML rendering is of the correct size.

Thus, the root cause is with the CHM files specifying a small font; they're all tested on windows platforms, where presumably the font-size gets adjusted for, in favour legacy compatibility, so we need to add this 'hack' to be compliant give correct rendering results w.r.t. Microsoft's CHM/help viewer.

Attached patch for fix.

How can we get this reviewed and in-place for Intrepid?

I'll update this package for Intrepid.

Hi Allisson - thanks for your help and input!

It would be great if you can check on any CHM files if you find a similar issue, and/or if the extra magnification level is too much and should eg be more conservative.

I'd like to sponsor this fix, however I have two concerns.

Firstly, I don't have any chm files to hand, could someone
point me to one I can test with? It can be in a package in
Ubuntu, on the web, or attached to this report, I don't mind.

Secondly, there is a bug report about this upstream:

could you please attach the patch there and see if anyone
comments on it?

Still the same tiny font in Jaunty.

If someone had done as I had asked and given me a pointer to a
.chm file that I could use to test the fix then this bug would have
been fixed 6 months ago.

Are you able to supply the needed information?

James Westby (james-w) wrote :

The upstream author has some questions at

"Thanks for reporting this - so are the fonts too small for every document
you open? Would it fix the problem if we could save the "default" zoom?"

If you have a sourceforge account then please respond there, otherwise
I will relay all messages to that bug report.

Daniel Pirch (dpirch) wrote :

I think this has already been answered on the sourceforge page. The problem does not affect _all_ chm files, for example appears in the right size by default.

I see that the patch above just zooms in 5 times; this would mean that some files would be displayed with a too large font.
