This is because the screenshots supplied on dotsub are varied in format. Some have one black bar, some 2 black bars, and some have none. See the attached images for examples.

The algorithm for saving images needs to be more complex. It is set up to assume that all of the screenshots have one big black bar on the bottom, so is messing up the others.

We can actually upload our own screenshots to dotsub for the thumbnail
images. What size/format should they be in to work correctly for us? I can
have our interns do this systematically with all the clips.

Looks like the images that exist are 480x270 pixel JPEGs.

However, if the aspect ratio of the video is different, then the screenshots should be a different size. Let's say, keep the screenshot images always 480 pixels wide, and then use whatever height is needed for that video's aspect ratio.

Sounds good! This was more of an issue when they were embedded on the front
page, but I think it's still important for the 24-hr vids and for what Joel
is working on...
