Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

Hello, I use Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook edition and have a problem. I use GIMP as my primary image editing software and mostly like to compress my works (xcf files) to make them smaller. Anyways, when I save my file as xcf.bz2 in Gimp to my home directory or somewhere else, my nautilus crashes while trying to show thumbnail of the file. I think there might be a problem on this feature of nautilus. However, if I save my work as xcf.gz or solely xcf, no problem occurs.

Thanks for your interest.

Thank you for your bug report. I cannot reproduce the issue for your sample file, it shows the thumbnail without any crash. Nautilus does not support thumbnails for XCF files "out-of-the-box" -- do you know which package you installed to get them (I used gnome-xcf-thumbnailer)? Could you enter the following command in a terminal and post the output here:
gconftool-2 -g /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/image@x-xcf/command

Unfortunately, I am not sure which packgace is used to show xcf files.
Here is the output of the command you mentioned.

/desktop/gnome/thumbnailers/image@x-xcf/command için belirtilmiş bir değer yok

It says there is no value attended for command.

Hmm, ok, could you try the following command?
gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/thumbnailers > thumbnailers.txt

This generates the file thumbnailers.txt in the current directory, could you attach this to the bug report?
When you get the crash, are there any error messages in the file ~/.xsession-errors ?

Ok, I have attached the txt file to this e-mail. Plus, I reproduced
this bug and got the result from .xsession-errors

ERROR:io-xcf.c:1443:xcf_image_stop_load: code should not be reached
Initializing nautilus-gdu extension
Initializing nautilus-open-terminal extension

This was the latest error logs from that file.

I think you have installed a custom (i.e. not provided by Ubuntu) pixbuf library (for example, in order to get xcf support in eog), maybe the one from this blog post: http://blog.reblochon.org/2009/03/gift-to-competition.html ?
Could you again try a command in the terminal and attach its output? Please do the following:
gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders > pixbufloaders.txt

I could not open the blog, but here I attached the output.

The file /usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-xcf.so is not part of the standard Ubuntu repositories, and is responsible for the crash. If you installed this via a .deb package you should be able to find out which package is responsible with
dpkg -S libpixbufloader-xcf.so

Otherwise you can delete or rename it, e.g. with

sudo mv /usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-xcf.so{,.bak}

[This will ask you for your password]
But you will then also lose support for xcf in applications like eog. You can still get thumbnails for xcf files by installing the gnome-xcf-thumbnailer package.

Sorry, the "sudo mv ..." command should be all on one line. To avoid long lines, you can also do it in two steps ;)

cd /usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/
sudo mv libpixbufloader-xcf.so{,.bak}

It looks like gloobus-preview is responsible for these kind of crashes :)

sinan@sinan-1015PEM:~$ dpkg -S libpixbufloader-xcf.so
gloobus-preview: /usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-xcf.so.0
gloobus-preview:
/usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-xcf.so.0.0.0
gloobus-preview: /usr/lib/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-xcf.so

Thanks for your support and kindness.

By the way, how can i inform gloobus-preview developers about this bug?

Great we found the culprit ;) Notifying the gloobus developers is very easy, they are also using launchpad for their project -- I added a bug task for gloobus-preview, so the bug can stay here.

@gloobus developers: There is basically the same bug report for chromium crashing when attaching a xcf.bz2 file in gmail: http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=44344
That bug report contains a stacktrace: http://chromium.googlecode.com/issues/attachment?aid=-2234799536895225943&name=gdb-chromium.txt&token=68d030c57ff353b2fe35f94e3e32e300

Changed in nautilus (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → Invalid
summary: - nautilus crashes when tries to show a thumbnail of an xcf.bz2 file
+ nautilus crashes when trying to show a thumbnail of an xcf.bz2 file

I've got this crahsing problem too. Interesting is that Gloobus Preview does not crash and shows a view of the image while EOG and other Gnome apps did crash on viewing the file or try to create a preview
