Update:

If I drag & drop the Thunderbird icon a few pixels away from the Unity Dash, it springs back into position the message counter reappears.

If I don't do this however, it stays broken.

I am affected by this bug as well. A very annoying bug that affects everyone using the default e-mail client should be high priority.

Problem is worse in Ubuntu 13.10.

"Pixel drag" workaround doesn't work anymore.

Counter number doesn't change after deleting a message.
