Apparently, wine doesn't like the new networking extension. You could try checking if the latest version of Wine fixes this, and then file a bug report with them if it doesn't.

Using GG2 with wine has always been problematic, at least until we switched to GM 8, which improved matters a bit iirc. Network problems in wine such as this one happened before as well (Remember this? "Unable to connect to self. Epic fail, dude." :D)

I could try using different switches for the Boost Asio library which is used for networking, so that it uses a different backend which might be better supported by wine, but that could cause unexpected new problems for everyone, not just wine users, so I'd prefer not to.

Setting this to incomplete while waiting for a response. AJF told be that it works for him with the current "unstable" version of wine, you might want to try installing that.

Changed in gg2:
status: New → Incomplete

I am on System 7 and I have the same problem... "Connecting to the lobby has failed." and the hosting of the server is the same.

GG2 always worked for me on wine, both hosting and lobby. Wine versions 1.3/1.4, GG2 version anything after 2.2
