Bug Description

A new version of the popular Go Kart racing game 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐓𝐮𝐱𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐭 is out (http://supertuxkart.blogspot.in/2015/04/supertuxkart-09-released.html ). The 0.9 release is a major upgrade over the 0.8.x series. One of the main changes is the graphics improvements brought by the new 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚 rendering engine (forked from the previous Irrlicht engine). For more details on Antarctica see http://supertuxkart.sourceforge.net/Antarctica:_Overview

SuperTuxKart 0.9 deb packages are relatively unavailable for Ubuntu and Debian distros. However, 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐧 unstable has packaged 0.9 and this version was pulled by the latest development release Ubuntu 15.10 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒚 𝑾𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒘𝒐𝒍𝒇 ( See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/supertuxkart ). The latest SuperTuxKart package on Debian unstable: https://packages.debian.org/sid/supertuxkart

So, I request SuperTuxKart be updated to 0.9 for 𝐔𝐛𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐮 𝟏𝟒.𝟎𝟒𝐋𝐓𝐒 and newer releases.

Unfortunately on my AMD machine, the game segfaults when race starts :-( SuperTuxKart also complains about my drivers being old, while in fact I'm running the latest 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐭 (fglrx) driver available on 𝐔𝐛𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐮 𝟏𝟒.𝟎𝟒𝐋𝐓𝐒. This is the output of 𝚐𝚕𝚡𝚒𝚗𝚏𝚘 | 𝚐𝚛𝚎𝚙 𝙾𝚙𝚎𝚗𝙶𝙻:

So to see how it runs under open source 𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐨𝐧 driver, I did a live boot of the latest point release of 𝐔𝐛𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐮 𝟏𝟒.𝟎𝟒𝐋𝐓𝐒 (Ubuntu 14.04.3 with 3.19 kernel and graphics stack from Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid). And surprisingly, it ran fine under the default graphics settings. When I upped the graphics effects to maximum it still ran well, albeit with a lag. This is the output of 𝚐𝚕𝚡𝚒𝚗𝚏𝚘 | 𝚐𝚛𝚎𝚙 𝙾𝚙𝚎𝚗𝙶𝙻:

It seems either AMD's proprietary driver's quality is getting really bad or open source drivers are doing really good :-) This looks like an upstream bug anyway. So, I'll try reporting this on SuperTuxKart's GitHub repo https://github.com/supertuxkart/stk-code . Hope they fix it by 0.9.1 release so that we AMD Catalyst users can get a taste of SuperTuxKart's new version.

Thanks @c-korn for taking the trouble of packaging the latest SuperTuxKart package and making it available on PlayDeb. I'll report back if the devs release a fix.
