Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-system-monitor

The hard disk usage graph in the System Monitor panel applet constantly displays 0% activity, even during intervals of heavy disk access. This graph worked correctly under Hardy Heron. I am using two 500GB SATA drives in a RAID-0 configuration.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Add the System Monitor applet to a panel
2. From the applet's Preferences window, enable the hard disk activity graph
3. Perform a hard-disk intensive task (e.g. run the Disk Usage Analyzer)

Expected outcome:
Disk activity is indicated on the graph, and the tooltip indicates the percentage

Actual outcome:
The graph remains flat, and the tooltip indicates 0% disk usage

could you run mount and attach the log to the bug? what stats do you have in the /sys/block/device corresponding to the disk which is active there?

Here's the relevant line from /proc/diskstats, I hope this is what you were looking for:

I've attached the output of mount.

I am also having this problem.

However like Ryan most of my system is on a Linux software raid disk. I have 1 partition which is not on raid and the graph displays correctly for it.

As a rough hunch I would guess that the disk system monitor graph seems to only poll "sdX" and "hdX" devices and not "mdX".

I'm seeing the problem, but I'm not using RAID. I have two encrypted partitions -- one setup up automatically during installation, and the other set up manually with cryptsetup and LUKS.

I copied some big files from one encrypted partition on one hard drive to another encrypted partition on another hard drive. The GNOME System Monitor Disk graph showed no activity and always read "0% in use."

In case it helps, here are a few "cat /proc/diskstats | grep 'sda5'" where /dev/sda5 was being read:

AFAIR it use to work with previous versions of Ubuntu 7.10 almost surely and probably 8.04 too. I haven't changed my hard drive settings since that time, I just followed the regular Ubuntu upgrading steps.

No RAID, no disk encryption, just a single laptop hardrive formatted as ext3 + lvm by the ubuntu installer a couple of years ago (probably 7.04).

Though judging by the HDD LED on my box, as much as it's got some impulses being reported while my LVM is busy.. The indicated activity is WAY less than what I think the actual activity level is. It's possible that the applet is only reporting activity of my system drive or something (which is NOT in my LVM).

Yeah, you know, I'm gonna have to say nevermind about my previous comments of it looking fine. I definitely see disk io, but it's totally totally not reflective of the actual system io.. Looks like some work is needed here. I'd also love it if there was a means of illustrating different disks io too, but you know, we can worry about that desire later :)
