Bug Description

I was suprised to double click a .deb and see this wonderful app.

But it'd be even better if it just quickly did a search of "./" to see you downloaded any dependencies as well, and then it could install those.

i.e. people normally download .debs and any special dependencies to the same directory and install them at once. As it is now you have to work out the dependencies on the downloaded files before you can install the software.

Gdebi is great, but it would be nice if it did search the local directory for dependencies. I can confirm this wishlist bug.

GDebi shouldn't only search the local directory but also show a button next to the "Dependencies cannot be satisfied"-message that opens an "Open File"-dialog which allows you to select the dependent packages and/or the directory where they are stored.

A related problem is that if I have a program consisting of two or more packages, updating them with GDebi is a pain. Example: I have the packages "foo" and "foo-data", foo depends on foo-data. I want to update the packages from version 1.0 to version 1.1 - I can of course only install foo-data 1.1 first, but the package manager will complain and say that I will have to use "sudo apt-get install -f" to fix broken dependencies. Only then I can finally install foo 1.1.

Indeed, this would be very handy for users downloading backported multi-packaged software from sites like http://getdeb.net.

Just commented the tip "sudo dpkg -i *.deb" to an app with many sub-debs on getdeb because of this, then I thought I'd file a bug. Good to see that it was already here!

I don't think a "browse" option is necessary, either the dependencies are in repositories or it is downloaded together with the other debs. Who would spread them out over the drive? :)

Looking for dependencies in the same directory as the current deb would be a great usability improvement though!

It would be great if the program Gdebi able to automatically search for dependencies in the same directory where is installed deb package.

I disagree with the decision to mark this as a duplicate of bug #449932. Being able to install multiple debs at the same time might be a pre-requisite for this bug, but it's definitely not the same as searching in the current directory and automatically finding dependencies.

Also, if they were actually duplicates, wouldn't it make more sense to mark 449932 as a duplicate of this one, since it was reported ~3 years earlier?
