As noted, I can reproducibly crash Gala with an error similar to

Fatal server error:
(EE) wl_drm@4: error 0: authenicate failed
(EE)

(gala:23356): mutter-ERROR **: Connection to xwayland lost

This issue happens when gala is launched with --display-server and I try to launch wingpanel and pantheon-calculator, but it also happens when gala is launched without --display-server when I try to launch plank.
