Pressing a hotkey temporarily steals focus

Scenario: You are in an app and you focus something (a text field, a listboxrow, etc).

You press a hotkey in Gala (say, to increase my screen brightness or to change a song, if you don't have dedicated keys, you can simply assign those in the keyboard plug). This will temporarily cause the the application to lose focus for the selected element.

Does focus return to the widget that was focused?

Focus does return but the loss of focus causes, for example, items in a treeview being renamed to cancel renaming. So you cannot name something using two keyboard layouts.

This bug affects many more users than it might seem. The most frequent case of its demonstration is switching keyboard layout when typing. I came across this on a daily basis when typing in Files, Transmission, dconf Editor etc.

This branch: lp:~jeremywootten/pantheon-files/fix-1643526-block-focus-out-during-rename provides a work around for Files, allowing keyboard layout changes during rename. However, a fix in Gala would be better if other applications are affected.
