Sounds like wingpanel needs a dbus interface to handle opening certain indicators. So I think this is actually "invalid" for Slingshot.

This is caused by the deprecated wingpanel-indicator-launcher package being installed with the new library version of slingshot-launcher. After removing that package the launcher works beautifully again. So the solution would be to stop including that package with the OS, I would do it but I have absolutely no clue how. Would love if someone can do it and enlighten me :)

We still need to add a DBus interface to wingpanel so it can accept shortcut keys from Gala/GSD

So there's just one more part to this. It requires changing a key at org.pantheon.desktop.gala.behavior panel-main-menu-action to wingpanel --toggle-indicator app-launcher

(I think it's app-launcher. might be application-launcher or some other permutation of that general phrase)
