Bug Description

Gala should only display the Plank-like Alt+Tab icons at the bottom if Plank is currently running. Maybe this information could be found via cerbere + DBus? It's very annoying for us users who customise Pantheon or don't use Pantheon at all, but want to use Gala in our own desktop environment.

Do you run a different dock on the bottom? We actually have support for arbitrary bottom docks, as long as we include them in a list, at least position wise. It will still look like plank, but we'll hide the correct window and transition from its width if possible. We can add a setting to completely disable the dock as well though.

I run Docky, but sometimes I use panels exclusively without a dock. The tab-switching is really quite annoying, and I figure that it wouldn't be too difficult to simply check whether plank is running before displaying the bottom animation.
