Cannot compile: "undefined reference" errors with libclutter-gtk

I'm getting a long weird string of errors trying to compile gala: http://pastebin.com/XByDsUnc

Autotools generated this Makefile: http://pastebin.com/Ms1PbNt4
which I can clearly see is linking to libclutter and libclutter-gtk. Still it is telling me that there are undefined references to functions mostly from those two libraries.

Not sure what's going on, or if there's a better place to ask for build help, but you might want to check this out anyway.
