Bug Description

Binary package hint: hplip

My HP LJ 1018 has worked just fine in previous versions of Ubuntu, but in hardy, it's a complete mess and barely working at all.

Starting from a clean slate (with firmware downloaded), I switch the printer on and get the following log messages:

Apr 14 12:18:00 quest kernel: [254842.737086] usb 1-8: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 31

Apr 14 12:18:01 quest /usr/sbin/hplj1018: foo2zjs: ... download successful.

So far, so normal.

I go into System -> Admin -> Printing and click "New Printer". This generates the following log messages:
Apr 14 12:20:09 quest kernel: [254970.828899] ppdev0: registered pardevice

Which I assume is related to LPT, so that's fine. The first device in the resulting list is "HP LaserJet 1018 USB KP0VDES HPLIP"; Forward gives me HP; Forward gives me HP LaserJet 1018 Foomatic/foo2zjs and then the printer is set up. I get the following log message (probably irrelevant?):

Apr 14 12:21:30 quest cupsd[6104]: *** WARNING *** The program 'cupsd' uses the Apple Bonjour compatibility layer of Avahi.

Those first two lines and the last line look pretty suspicious to me.

It's probably worth noting that in previous releases, I never used HPLIP for this printer and it was set up direct to USB.

Scott,

Please add the user to the scanner group and configure the printer using hp-setup -ai and it should resolve this, if not post your results.

User already in scanner group.

Printer is owned by lp/scanner:

quest scott% lsusb
Bus 001 Device 031: ID 03f0:4117 Hewlett-Packard

quest scott% ls -l /dev/bus/usb/001/031
448950 0 crw-rw---- 1 lp scanner Apr 14 12:23 /dev/bus/usb/001/031

First attempt with hp-setup -ai (no change since error above)

Using connection type: usb

--------------------
| DEVICE DISCOVERY |
--------------------

error: No devices found.
error: Error occured during interactive mode. Exiting.

then tried:
1) Sytem -> Admin -> Printing
2) deleted existing printer
3) stopped cups
4) switched printer off
5) made sure nothing lp/cups/hpy was running
6) started cups again
7) switched printer back on
8) confirmed still owned by lp/scanner

/dev/usb/lp0 reappears with the reset owned by root/lp:
crw-rw-rw- 1 root lp 180, 0 2008-04-14 16:42 /dev/usb/lp0

Ran hp-setup -ai again:

usb, saw the printer this time:

Using device: hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_1018?serial=KP0VDES

A plug-in is required for this printer. (selected download), looked like it downloaded a bunch of stuff:

/usr/share/hplip/base
/usr/share/hplip/base/async.pyc
/usr/share/hplip/installer
/usr/share/hplip/installer/core_install.pyc

/usr/share/hplip/data/plugins/hp_laserjet_1018.plugin
/usr/share/hplip/data/plugins/plugins.conf
/usr/share/hplip/data/firmware

Then it did:

Using queue name: HP_LaserJet_1018

Found a possible PPD file: lsb/usr/hpijs/HP/hp_laserjet_1018-hpijs.ppd
Desc: HP LaserJet 1018 Foomatic/hpijs-ZJS (recommended)

Adding print queue to CUPS:

Queue name: HP_LaserJet_1018
PPD file: lsb/usr/hpijs/HP/hp_laserjet_1018-hpijs.ppd
Location:
Information: Automatically setup by HPLIP

Ok...

Then it tried to print a test page, and gave:

error: Unable to communicate with device (code=12): hp:/usb/HP_LaserJet_1018?serial=KP0VDES
error: Unable to print to printer. Please check device and try again.

In syslog, I see:

You are using hplip 2.8.2. Please install hplip 2.8.4 from hplip.net

Also you are missing many required dependencies. Installing hplip 2.8.4 should resolve these problems.

I have done some tests and the problem seems to be the following:

The printer works perfectly if you instal EITHER the firmware from the foo2zjs site (with "getweb" and "arm2dl") OR from HP (with "hp-setup"). If your system has both firmware files and also both UDEV rules files and upload scripts, the firmware is tried to get uploaded twice which makes the printer crash. The red lines blinks alone for a longer time and then the green light goes on.

You should get back to a working state by deactivating the firmware file from foo2zjs with

sudo chmod -r /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware/sihp1020.dl

and then turning off and turning on the printer again, so that only HP's firmware uploader uploads the firmware. Then the printer should print.

Thanks very much, Till.

That does seem to have solved the problem.

What would be the correct way to have set up this printer? I let the automagic do it originally, that doesn't invoke hp-setup?

This time I turned printer after starting machine (indeed just before printing). The queue in cups website and in lpq looked fine (job was waiting).
I think next I tried following step
- restart cups
- restart printer
- restart computer (printer turn on)
- re-establish printer in cups

It didn't help. I gave up and turned computer & printer off. Today during initialization of system printer finally started to print.

Do you think it might mean that firmware has been updated???

My problem went away after removing Intrepid and installing Hardy, using the HPLIP Toolbox to install the firmware.

In Intrepid the printer is left in a bad state, and even the BIOS gets stuck for a few minutes during boot-up while trying to recognize the USB devices. I assume this is so because of bad firmware being sent to the printer. Indeed, turning the printer off for a while removes the BIOS problem until the first reboot --but of course this doesn't make the printer work.

I could conceivably test the printer with Intrepid in the next few days. If someone can think of something to try out, please let me know.

By the look of it, the printer wouldn't work. The script hplj1018 in the foo2zjs tarball Rick Richardson suggested using is exactly the same (save for the location of usb_printerid). That package seems to work fine, so I think the script should not be the problem. I agree there's no chance of it finding the printer as per line 203, but it appears this is not required since the alternative foo2zjs works. Something else in Ubuntu's foo2zjs is broken.

What is the reason why this foo2zjs package is not used in Ubuntu? From the documentation I suspect it's a potential patent problem, but could someone confirm?

Indeed, the warning "DON'T USE the foo2zjs package from: Ubuntu, SUSE, Mandrake/Manrivia, Debian, RedHat, Fedora, Gentoo, Xandros, EEE PC, Linpus, MacOSX, or BSD!" seems to indicate that Ubuntu is hardly the only distribution not to use this package, so there must be a good reason...

think that the problem was that we couldn't download firmware.

I decided to compare list of files with 1018 in a name on my father
and mine computer. I found one of following files missing on his:

/usr/share/hplip/data/firmware/hp_laserjet_1018.fw.gz
/usr/share/foomatic/db/source/printer/HP-LaserJet_1018.xml
/usr/share/ppd/hpijs/HP/hp_laserjet_1018-hpijs.ppd
/usr/share/ppd/foo2zjs/HP-LaserJet_1018.ppd.gz

I copied it, but it didn't help.

After some time I tried to ran
/usr/sbin/hplj1018

on my father computer and it failed so I compared the files and fixed
my father one. After that printer started to work.

But it isn't working today. There are a lot of error message during
(slow) system start.

What I going to do:
Remove from my machine all the printer specific package and files and
start again.

I was too prompt. It didn't worked. Next step download firmware.
Helped but no entirely.

This time it might be HPLIP fault, but I need to perform. Further tests.

Now works HP LaserJet 1018 for me: I have downloaded firmware from http://embar.wen.ru/html/bylos/linux/hp/sihp1018-dl.zip and extracted this archive. I put the file sihp1018.dl in /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware directory. I have installed hplip, hp-ppd, hplip-data, hpijs, foo2zjs, libcupsimage2-dev packages (I don't know what of thees are necesary).

On Jaunty (with all updates) the firmware files for the HP printers which need a firmware file get automatically loaded when one sets up these printers with system-config-printer which makes the printer immediately working. The firmware gets download as part of the HPLIP plugin, so you need HPLIP to be able to use the files out of the box (by uncompressing, moving/linking, and renaming you could use them also with foo2zjs). Please try it out.
