I had this problem too, I upgraded from 7.10 with alternate CD. The gnome-terminal and fluxbox menu font both had the problem.

In my laptop, i fixed it as following:

1, cd /etc/fonts/conf.d
2, sudo rm 10-hinting-medium.conf
3, sudo ln -s ../conf.avail/10-hinting-full.conf

then restart gnome-terminal, it works!
