Bug Description

Leafpad cant create new '.txt' documents on locale 'es' (if the document has characters with accents) it prints error:"Can't convert codeset to 'ANSI_X3.4-1968' ".

I am using a fresh Fluxbuntu install, i havent uninstalled anything yet. As a workaround i edit already created documents. For example:

$echo " ">new_document.txt
$leafpad new_document.txt

In this case leafpad can save the document even if it has characters with accent.

Same for mousepad.

Installing openoffice.org fixes the locale problem.

aptitude install openoffice.org

i have the same problem. but saving the same text (from clipboard) as iso-8955-1 in gvim works without any problem. in fact, saving as utf-8 produce wrong encodings...

there's nothing in the text that "can't be converted to iso-8859-1" in my case (éáí)

my guess is that several of the "can't convert" errors on leafpad are actual bugs.

Hallo, 2008.

Just happened to me, again. Leafpad 0.8.18.1

The culprit at this time is an apostrophe of the wrong kind ’ (rather than ' )
 almost invisible in " it’s "
... though it could be any stray character.

My xkbmap language was set to gb, and it shouldn't be a problem

Workaround by changing all apostrophes to apostrophe; save then works.

Don't you just love the way...
