fluxbuntu 7.10 rc : international localisation doesn't work in fluxbox menu

It's impossible to obtain the french version of applications when using the fluxbox menu. It only works when using uxterm terminal to run an application.

Can you get the French version if you run the application from the application launcher? What if you stop fluxbox (ctrl+alt+backspace), log in the text console and startx. Will that fix your problem?

I'm having a similar problem but with accents on oowriter. From fluxbox menu and aplication laucher accents do not work but, if I type "LANG=en_US.UTF-8 oowriter" in application launcher I get accents. Also, if I stop fluxbox and startx from the console, accents works.

Hi,

The only way to run application in french is when to use uxterm. This after the
installation of the package "set-language-env". Abiword, claws-mail, fluxbox are
well localised, but I have some problems with standards ISO and UTF8

I did as you wrote : stop fluxbox, log in text console and startx : some
applications like abiword run in french if i run from the application launcher
or menu launcher ! But the most stays in english even when i reinstall them like
pidgin. It seems as if the localisation doesn't work properly at the system
start.

So i tried to modify my /etc/environment... but i noticed no change as if it
were not working.

I thought it could be a problem with SLIM. I know that a lot of distro have
problem with localisation with this login manager. I tried with Gdm or xdm which
are normally supported by the package set-langage-environement. But I obtain
always the same result.

Concerning oowriter : i have the same problem too.

I tried an old version of Fluxbuntu : fluxbuntu-nbuild1-rev2-desktop-i386 : the
localisation works fine in this version.

I beg your pardon for my bad english and I hope you'll understand my
experiences. If i could be helpful by testing something else, you just have to
ask.

As I wrote in the topic on the forum of ubuntu-fr, Fluxbuntu is a very nice
project. It could be very interesting if no english people could use this work
in their own language.

It looks as thou we are suffering from the same problem.

Does it work if you force the LANG variable from the application
laucher? For me I write this in app launcher:

LANG=en_US.UTF-8 oowriter

Apparently this problem is related to the Login Manager (SLIM) not
setting the environment variables correctly.

It looks as though the new version of Slim (1.3) has a fix for this
but the Debian, Ubuntu and Fluxbuntu packages are still using the
older version.

To fix this, add the following lines to the beginning of
/etc/init.d/slim, right after the comments section

if [ -r /etc/default/locale ]; then
. /etc/default/locale
export LANG LC_ALL LANGUAGE
fi

This will make SLIM read your locale before it starts so, in your next
boot, everything should be OK. It worked for me...

Hi,

It works for me too after I did reinstall fluxbuntu : my language environnement
files wasn't proper because of the debian package language-environment i used.
Very nice job Daniel ! Thanks for your help ! That make Fluxbuntu a very
interresting distribution for little PC, and for non english people ;o) It run
fine on my VIA Eden Nano 800Mhz and 256 Mo of RAM !

thanks to DanielVictoria for his helpful hint - I've had the same problrm with the Czech locale and it was the only solution that worked. Thanks a lot, I was really desperated :/
