I have the same issue:

Kubuntu 8.10 64bit
Intel dual core 3.0ghz
8gb ram
nVidia 8400 GS

I tried upgrading nvidia drivers to 180.11, tried disabling all firefox plugins, tried disabling compiz, nothing fixed the problem. One interesting thing to note is I run VMware on the same machine and my Windows VM with firefox runs fine.

Anymore ideas?
