I'm having the same problem. The menu texts and icons first disappear when I mouse over the menu bar the first time after launchin oo.
Same version of openoffice.org package too.

I can't reproduce this on Intrepid with the fglrx driver enabled. Can someone who has it occurring on hardy, try on Intrepid?

hello, i discovered that in my case the bug depends on compiz and nvidia-proprietary driver version 177.
switching off compiz or reverting back to nvidia-proprietary driver version 173 makes the bug disappear.
good luck

Also please attach your Xorg.0.log and the output of lspci -vvnn, and your xorg.conf if you've made any customizations to it.

@huiii, this bug report has to do with -fglrx, whereas your issue is particular to -nvidia so is unrelated.

What indication is there that this bug has anything to do with X.Org or the fglrx module rather than openoffice.org? I haven't seen this behavior in software packages other than openoffice.

That's actually a good question.

@ccheney, I notice you refiled this against the video driver. Could you briefly summarize why? If we are to upstream this bug to AMD we need a specific justification of why it's a video issue.

I don't remember my original motivation to reassign it to fglrx.

However, it would appear that if the same issue also occurs for huiii but only when he is using both a specific version of nvidia driver with compiz that it happening in the same way on fglrx is probably a similar bug of some sort.

This of course doesn't explain how the same kind of bug would be seen in both nvidia and fglrx, but only in apparently specific versions of them, etc.

Josh, are you able to reproduce this issue on intrepid? Mario asked in an earlier comment but I'm not sure we got that answered.

If it occurs only on Hardy, could you try upgrading to one of the newer versions of -fglrx (we recommend using Envy).

I spoke with Chris directly - neither of us have a clear idea where this bug might belong. First step though is to reproduce with -fglrx on Intrepid.

as i understand it from my observations is that the whole application OO will not refresh its graphics.
this causes buttons to appear and disappear, but also leaves the process-bar on the status bar once it is ready. to have the satus-bar refreshed, i need to move the OO window around. the same thing goes for deleted text: instead of disappearing, it remains full or half drawn, but once i move the OO-window, it refreshes and the deleted words disappear.

hope this helps to find out if this is the same bug when using newest nvidia-driver OR fglrx / with compiz enabled.

thx

Still waiting on reproduction.

This bug is *only* going to focus on the fglrx issue, so please make a separate report for issues seen with -nvidia.

Reporting the same bug for oo.3 on Intrepid Ibex with Compiz turned on.
Is there any fix for that yet?

Here I am sending a screen cap of my OO so that others can see if they have the same problem.

Same problem with Nvidia 96 driver on Ubuntu 8.1, AMD cpu (32 bit).

Problem appeared after I turned on Visual effects in the display settings (window animation etc).

Temporary SOLUTION: turn off Visual effects (no window animation etc). Works for me.

I was having the same issue. I turned off visual effects as suggested and the menu appeared just as reported. I had previously installed the Nvidia Driver 96.43.09. Running Ubuntu 8.1, AMD CPU 32 bit as reported above. I hope this helps and is able to lead to a fix. I like those effects!

Thank you for reporting this bug about fglrx, however the video card mentioned in this bug report is no longer supported in fglrx. ATI only supports R600 and newer chips. You'll want to focus on using the -ati driver instead for this hardware.
