Some documents (e.g., tutorial) are hard to navigate without a side toc

I agree. Does anyone know enough Sphinx to allow for multiple kinds of layouts depending on the content?

I think all pages except possibly front page would benefit from a (sleek) toctree. That should be simple to do by special casing the frontpage.
