A side table of contents would be helpful for some parts of the web page, e.g. the tutorial.

I agree. Does anyone know enough Sphinx to allow for multiple kinds of layouts depending on the content?

I think all pages except possibly front page would benefit from a (sleek) toctree. That should be simple to do by special casing the frontpage.
