Bug Description

PXE booting the precise installer for certification testing. The system is a Lenovo L420 (201102-7325). It PXE boots and starts booting the kernel and hangs after a second or so and does not progress any farther.

The last few messages are:

ACPI: Added _OSI (Module Device)
ACPI: Added _OSI (Processor Device)
ACPI: Added _OSI (3.0 _SCP Extensions)
ACPI: Added _OSI (Processor Aggregator Device)

And that's where it hangs.

I should add that this is not an issue with our PXE setup, it's been used to successfully install at least 4 other machines using the same configuration... this is an issue specifically with the L420

Will have to try later, I've got too much work at the moment to come
back to that one. That's a good thought though, but not quickly
possible at the moment since these systems are all PXE booted.

If I get a moment in the next few days, I'll burn a USB key and try that.

Ich have new Information. I tried a few things in the past days and actually i was sucessfull.
acpi=off disabled all my FN-Keys and the Battery-Indicator. The Options "noapic" or "nolapic" let precise also start and the FN-Keys and the Battery-Indicator works now. Unfortunately "noapic_timer" was no longer sucessfull.

I found out that:
a) it only affects x64 systems
b) it is not related to ubuntu only, but also to fedora (and so I think on all x64 systems)
c) it is related to the linux kernel, because I have a x64 windows and it works "fine" (as far you can call windows fine ;) )

d) to run a x64 system though, you cann add the following kernel parameters
    noapic pci=assign-busses apicmaintimer idle=poll reboot=cold,hard
      (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1084622)
e) The debug boot options says additionally

    ACPI: Added _OSI(Processor Aggregator Device)
ACPI: EC: Loop up EC in DSDT

You can also visit this thread:
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/Buggy-DSDT-for-ThinkPad-L420-and-probably-others/td-p/591955 that

I hope you will find a solution soon.

Okay, I'm sorry for closing the bug report based on fedora facts.
But, everybody should be smart enough to use the internet to get the bios update from the lenovo page.
Also I can't give a link, because a) lenovo won't allow deep-links and b) you have to select for model on your own on this page http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page

Should be enough ;)

No worries... :) it's still an active bug until I can get my guys to
officially verify that the BIOS update you found resolves it for my two
systems. No harm done!

> But, everybody should be smart enough to use the internet to get the bios update from the lenovo page.

Hahaha, you would think, but remember, this is the internetz. ;-)

That's a valid point. I've asked my guys in the lab to hunt down that
BIOS update for the L420 and L520 and verify that it resolves the issue
I saw as well.

> Should be enough ;)

Hope so :) thanks a lot for finding that update, I have my fingers crossed.

So, I just update the BIOS Update to the Version 1.17, thanks for the hint ;) , and now it works! :)
Ubuntu 64-Bit boots without any Problems and it seems, that all Functions are working.

But i think i have one little Bug detected. If i want to restart Ubuntu, it hangs bevor Ubuntu should shut down.

Also check this:
If you send your Laptop to S3 (suspend to RAM) and then wake it up
again, it goes off, out of the sudden. Can you confirm this?!

I've also checked your problem with the S3-state and can it confirm. Same problem here.

Hi,

I had also the problems with L420 until update the Bios to v1.17. But now, I have an other problem. When I use the laptop without AC-adapter (only battery) all works fine. But when I plugged in the AC-adapeter and only while the battery is charging the System will hang off completly after round-about 10 secondes. So always, when the L420 is charging the system will hang off after a few seconds.

With the bootoption "noapic" it works, and there is no problem.

But on my point of view, this is only a workaround.

So what is the real Problem here in detail? What can be done/what can I do for a real good solution?

Regards
