I've created a test document with openoffice and neither evince / acroread are able to see the notes, are you sure it's exporting the notes? Probably it's a bug with openoffice.

I have added an image of an opened pdf document in Evince and in Adobe reader side by side and the notes are missing in Evince.
I will attach the pdf and the odf files.

Confirmed: same behaviour to me. This made me start using acroread instead of evince... and all my university students, since my comments on their work are at the pdf. A pity we can't use evince because of that...

Confirmed. I created a document in LibreOffice Writer 3.3.2, added comments, and exported the document with comments. However, when I opened the document in Evince, the comments are greyed out and cannot be read.

I also tested reading the PDF with Acrobat and discovered that the comments were indeed readable. However, when viewed with Preview on a Mac, again the comments are greyed out and illegible.

I don't think the link to gnome-bugs #168304 is correct. That's about adding annotations support to evince (and it's indeed fixed, evince has annotation support from some time ago), this is about evince not sowing annotations created by openoffice/libreoffice.

@Goyo: Indeed, gnome-bugs #168304 is about having the ability to add annotations to the PDF document that is being viewed.

We need to find the proper bug report for Evince and add it in this report.

summary: - Evince doesn't display notes exported by openoffice
+ Evince doesn't display notes exported by LibreOffice
