Bug Description

Evergreen 3.8, related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1951996 comment #2 from Jennifer Pringle:

It would be useful to have columns that display either primary or preferred name, depending on whether or not the patron has a preferred name. Otherwise you have to have always have both the Primary Name and Preferred Name fields as display fields. This means potentially up to 6 name fields (if you display middle name) that you always need to display instead of just 3.

I think we want it to work this way throughout Evergreen (holds pull list, hold shelf, check in, etc.). There are a lot of places you could end up displaying a name the patron doesn't use if you forget to add the preferred name columns or remove them because you need fewer columns displaying.

I think it would be useful to have the grid show the preferred name first and the primary name below in parentheses, sort of like how we have it displayed on the patron summary bar. It would make the row slightly taller, but still avoid the need to have 6 name columns displayed.

One thing I'm on the fence about is whether it would be better to sort by the primary name or the preferred name.

+1 to this feature request. A staff member just asked me about this since they sometimes rely on the patron name columns in check in, for customers they don't know by name. They get a quick reminder of the customers name as they are checking in the items the customer just returned. But with the preferred name data, they need extra fields shown that are blank 99% of the time to make sure they are using the correct name.
