Since a lot of online services let users update their email addresses, I'm wondering what the motivation is for this wishlist item. Are you seeing cases where patrons are intentionally or unintentionally setting their record to the wrong address?

Hi Galen

Use case for this is a post-secondary institution which loads all their students using the institution assigned email addresses. They would like to prevent the students from changing this to a gmail or hotmail account.

Thanks for the additional information. (And I guess there's no need to recapitulate the debate about official vs. unofficial email addresses for college students. :-) )

Thinking aloud, if this were done as a library setting, it seems to me that it should be checking against the patron's home library (as opposed to the search library or the physical_loc library). It might also be useful display some explanatory text.

To suggest a couple other possibilities:

- would it be useful to tie whether the address can be edited to the patron's primary permission group, similar to where the default expiry interval is set?
- would a per-patron flag be useful?

Hi Galen

I agree that this should be tied to the patron's home library.

We discussed this issue on the Student Success Working Group call today

- We do think it would be useful to tie this to the patron's primary permission group (we think some institutions would want to allow staff but not students to edit email)

- Per person flag
-- we do not think this would be used by the academic institutions
-- we do think this would be useful for public libraries (specific users with bounceback issues, etc)
