version 3.0.9 and current master
If you create a patron statistical category with Allow Free Text off, and assign an entry from this stat cat to a patron, you are able to assign another entry from the same statistical category but you cannot set the entry to nothing. There's no blank entry in the drop-down list to choose from.

Still an issue in Evergreen 3.2. I'm also adding a reference to bug 1130389. Any fix to allow unsetting a stat cat should not reintroduce the blank stat cat entry issue reported in 1130389.

This bug is still an issue in Evergreen version 3.3.4 for PAILS SPARK group libraries.

I can confirm that the patron statistical category cannot be set to nothing.
This is also true of the Default Hold Pickup Location field. Once set it cannot be set to nothing.
