Publication year as facet

Bug Description

Our patrons often want to limit to recently published items (e.g. those published in the past 5 years). It would be lovely to have a facet in the public catalog to allow for these (rather than going into advanced search).

Bonus points for displaying this facet in ways that give users some guidance on which years to limit to. Our discovery layer uses the blacklight_range_limit tool (https://github.com/projectblacklight/blacklight_range_limit) to provide its publication year facet: http://libfind.linnbenton.edu/?utf8=%E2%9C%93&show_articles=false&search_field=all_fields&q=pompeii

This would be helpful for our libraries as well.

(I'd also add that being able to select the material type by facet instead of redoing the search would also be helpful, but that may deserve it's own wish list ticket.)

Changed in evergreen:
status: New → Confirmed
importance: Undecided → Wishlist

How do you see this working (or how does your discovery layer handle it) if there are records with no date? Either the old standard n.d. or [date of publication not identified]. Also for those dates with ? -- 192?

I think it is a great idea. Just wondering how it would handle the corner cases.

I'm not sure how the advanced search screen handles filtering by pub date. Does it eliminate anything that doesn't have a pub date that it can understand?

I haven't tested it, but it probably does

By default (though based on configuration) pub dates with "unknown" markers are normalized to the start of the unknown range for date1 and to the end for date2. So, a date1 of "199?" becomes "1990", and a date2 of the same becomes "1999".

Good to know!

In our discovery layer, records with no pub date at all simply aren't included in the facets.
