Bug Description

Before the web client is used in production, to improve the out-of-the box experience for staff, I would like to review each of the grids in the web client, work with the community to identify the most-often-displayed columns for those grids, and then ensure that those columns are set as defaults.

I would like to:
1) survey front-line staff users to see if we can identify those columns that are most commonly set to display by default. I know there will be some edge cases where a column is displayed by just one or two people, but, if we get enough people to complete a survey, we should be able to identify columns that everyone uses.

2) based on the results of those surveys, update the code so that those columns are indeed the ones that display by default.

Although staff can have the ability to set these fields to display through the column pickers, it's a better experience if the grids just display the information that users most likely need to see. The exercise is also an opportunity to discover if an important piece of data is missing from the web client column pickers.

Marking this confirmed. I agree that having a set of most commonly used columns out of the box would be a great improvement both for those exploring adopting Evergreen as well as current users. Too few, or inappropriate default columns may give the impression that Evergreen lacks functionality that exists if only the column is enabled.

In our experience with the xul client, many screens out of the box just don't display enough columns to be useful to staff members. Customizations are a headache to maintain and add another step to setting up a new workstation or replacing an old one.

Hear hear. This is especially problematic when the dropdown lists of options are so long that it is difficult to find what you are looking for (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1669866)

Workaround: I've found this Chrome extension which allows you to see, and more importantly export settings from the web client:

I've also set up some columns to some slightly more sensible defaults based on our legacy ILS. I don't actually work at the circ desk, and we're not live on Evergreen yet so it's hard for me to say if these are ideal, but they're definitely an improvement.

To use them, install the above extension, then click "Import" and paste the contents of this txt file in the box.
