Bug Description

While the Lock/Unlock icon is a ubiquitous symbol throughout the computer world to represent no-access/yes-access, I encourage you to reconsider its use in Epoptes. As an experienced teacher, one knows that the best policy is to use as little "power" as needed to do a job in the classroom: students let us get away with it if they like you but you don't want to "over-draw" your account. Anyway, the lock symbol in the middle of the screen over-does the power thing, I'd say. It is annoying to not be able to use 'your computer' when you want to and then to see a big old lock on the screen, well, it's like salt on the wound.

An alternative to the lock icon from the security world would be a pause icon from the entertainment world. A pause symbol is more approachable so to say and doesn't get people quite so annoyed. So that's my theory of symbols :)

Thanks for making Epoptes, I have no pause in saying it's great!

David thank you for the bug report,

we discussed the subject with a few teachers here, and they seemed to prefer the lock icon instead of the pause icon. Probably other teachers, maybe in different cultures, would reply otherwise; some would agree with you; some would propose another symbol... but we do have to defaults to something.

So we'll keep it as it is for now, and only document this workaround:
# dpkg-divert --rename /usr/share/epoptes-client/lock.svg
# cp my-own-icon.svg /usr/share/epoptes-client/lock.svg

Changed in epoptes:
importance: Undecided → Wishlist
status: New → Won't Fix
