Bug Description
I've been successfully, happily and gratefully using envy for a while now. I am running Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) because I don't like KDE4 but love KDE3.5... I have a GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x
If I remember correctly, recently there were some updates on glx drivers... (If someone tell me how to check history of upgrades I can search and give more details). The fact is that I suddenly could not start X anymore. I tried installing and reinstalling the nvidia modules but no success. The only way to start X was to delete the xorg.conf (which I think results in using vesa drivers...)
Finally I uninstalled envy and used jockey to install the nvidia drivers. My x server is now working perfect. Used nvidia-settings to configure for dual monitors.
While envy was trying to install the nvidia drivers I could see the following message:
"Warning! Cannot do version sanity checking because multiple nvidia.ko modules were found in kernel 2.6.24-24-generic."
Also, strangely, I could see some messages about problems with the battery monitoring module, although I am on a desktop. But maybe it's not related.
From your description here, it looks like you are saying that this problem has gone away completely and you believe the improvement was due to an update. If that is the case, then there is currently no bug. Since this bug was never identified in detail or confirmed, I'm marking this as Invalid (rather than Fix Released). Please note that that this does not mean your original bug report was incorrect or that your original problem was somehow not real (see http:// blog.launchpad. net/general/ of-bugs- and-statuses).
If I am mistaken and this problem is still occurring for you, or you believe it is happening to someone who is running a fully-updated system, then please post a comment in the bug report to indicate that.
Finally, please note that Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Hardy Heron is no longer supported on desktop systems, and among other things, this means that you will not receive security updates for newly discovered vulnerabilities (unless they happen to be in parts of the system shared with the Server version, which is supported through April 2013 provided that only a limited set of software, which does not include any software that provides or uses a graphical interface, is installed). Therefore, it is not safe for you to continue running Ubuntu 8.04 for a desktop system; it is highly advisable for you to upgrade to a currently supported release, such as Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, or to otherwise migrate to a system that receives support at least in the form of timely security updates.
