Bug Description

I successfully installed envyng. Then I used envyng to install Ati driver with the automatic installation option. After the suggested restart I got a blank screen after Ubuntu load screen. It happened every time in several restarts. Xserver did not start. Then I started Ubuntu in recovery mode and uninstalled all (Ati driver and envyng). Now I'm using the open source driver.
I hope I'll be able to use Ati driver in the future. There was no problems with envy legacy and Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn.

My system is :
Motherboard: Asus P4PE
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 2,53 Ghz
Graphics card: Sapphire Ati Radeon X1600 Pro
Hard drive: Maxtor 160 Gt
Monitor: Fujitsu-Siemens Scaleoview H22-1W

My best regards, Hannes

I too am having this same problem. I have an nVidia 8400m GS. I am running Hardy, and had no problems with envyng, it was working fine, but then yesterday after a reboot I encountered this problem as well. I've tried reinstalling the driver, but I keep having this same problem. So now I am running using the vesa driver. I hope this issue can be resolved. I posted on the ubuntu forums with this problem as well at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=868553

umer: this bugreport is about an ATI card while you're using an NVIDIA card.

Hannes: if you can reproduce the problem, please do it and attach the following files:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
/etc/X11/xorg.conf

I tried to install ATI Radeon 9600 driver using envy or envyng. After installation and rebooting a had colorful chaos screen instead of autorization screen. Ok. I used recovery mode, restored backuped xorg.conf, uninstall driver using envy and then i had normal screens: autorization and then gdm.

However, the display resolution was 1280x1024 instead of usual 1024x768. When i changed it to my usual format i had new chaos on the screen. New tryings of install/uninstall/restoring_xorg.conf changed nothing.

Now i'll reinstall Ubuntu 9.04, but i understand that for normal work of OS correct work of video card is needed.

Can you help me?

I have the same problem too when updating to the Envyng 185 drivers in Ubuntu 9.10.
The problem is that it will not recognize the EDID from the display.
See this link:

"The Problem
For some reason, the current nvidia driver does not auto-detect that a display is attached to an internal digital port. Even if you force the driver to assume a display is attached, it is still unable to read the EDID information from the display. It is this information which tells the driver how to drive the display. Starting X yields just a blank screen."

I have not yet figured out how to use the softMCCS program or the Phoenix EDID designer software yet.

System.
Sony Vaio CW series laptop. Intel I5 Core, Nvidia 330m 512MB

          Hi,

There was no solution to my report. That's why I abandoned Ubuntu completely and installed another linux-distro.
