This isn't about changing the look and feel, this is about the underlying architecture.

1) The window's grab area should be separated from its aesthetic border trim area ( as per Jonathan Kerls suggestion at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/160311/comments/19 )

2) Device display independence will help to alleviate this issue as well.
