Inventory slots seem to leak

When I drop an item, or eat it, the inventory slot it occupied remains highlighted with a red border, but empty. The expected behaviour would be that the entry would be removed, and the items remaining in the inventory got repacked into the window.

The red border is there to mark that there's a slot. The correct way to do this is to make sure that all available places in the inventory where there can be a slot always contains a slot (and to add a new row of slots when the inventory fills up).
I'm not so sure of repacking though. Won't that be confusing for the user? How is this handled in other major MMORPGs?

in other MMORPGs, the inventory doesn't "repack"
When an item is removed, the inventory box is emptied, but nothing
else changes in the inventory.

FYI, in some games like DDO, the vendors keep a small list of recently
sold items so that if you accidentally sell something, you can buy it
back at the same price for the next 24hours.
