xdg-open does not work in emacs

Bug Description
I cannot open a file from a emacs by using xdg-open. For example in eshell if i run:
"xdg-open 1.pdf" or "gvfs-open 1.pdf" it doesnot run. No mistake emerges.
At the same time, "evince 1.pdf" works perfectly.
