Bug Description

Hi

The elementary OS 0.3.1 fails to install the GRUB on a physical machine as well as Virtual Machine(VirtualBox).

Below is the error message :

The 'grub-pc' package failed to install into /target/. Without the GRUB
boot loader, the installed system will not boot.

Attaching the screenshot.

Thanks & Regards
Kumar Abhishek

Hi All

Got a workaround for the issue after a bit of searching about the issue, over the internet..
The system needs to stay connected to the INTERNET during installation, in order to successfully install the 'grub-pc' package into /target/.

I've tried and installed the OS successfully onto a virtual machine.

Thanks & Regards
Kumar Abhishek

From new reports this is also happening on 0.3.2, so we need to make sure this is not happening on Loki as well.

After not having success installing elementaryos-0.3.2-stable-amd64.20151209.iso under virtualbox (Debian Sid machine), tried on my ThinkPad E125 netbook and had the same issue - installer was failing during Grub2 install phase.

I was using Wifi connection which worked fine (tried direct install and install via LiveCD), installer was able to properly detect EFI partition (I was even trying to remove some old entries with efibootmgr, but didn't help).

Tried with both 'default' partitioning scheme as well as the custom ones - using either / +swap or / + /home + swap, but without separate /boot and using different filesystems ext4/XFS.

The only 'workaround' was to install by creating msdos/BIOS partition layout since UEFI/GPT did not work.

Moreover, I almost gave up on evaluating eOS which is meant to be put on several machines of my close friends and/or relatives which sometimes have to struggle with other distros since I can't help them with neither Windows nor Mac OS X...fortunately, Fabian replied to my question in #elementary which is otherwise deadly silent...

Sincerely,
Gour

This original bug report is actually a duplicate of a bug that was finally address in elementary OS Freya 0.3.2, the release was mostly based around it.

The issue reported in the above comment is about "efibootmgr_0.5.4-7ubuntu1.2_amd64.deb Hash Sum mismatch".

Multiple developers have tested this problem and are unable to reproduce it, efibootmgr installed successfully for testers. So the best guess is that the installation media used by the reporter was corrupt.

Hello,

How do you explain the fact that sha256sum is correct and I was not able to install elementaryOS even under vbox which does not use any media except the downloaded *.iso?
