mangled text rendering on dell xps 13

Tried elementary OS on a Dell (XPS 13 9343) but it failed to render text properly. It wouldn't display sometimes unless the mouse hovered over it and letters would be missing. Non-latin alphabets worked better than the rest.

I suspect that dell wither doesn't have the proper configurations for the distro or the ultra-high resolution of the laptop is unsuitable for it (there are problems in Windows as well with the text lacking crispness because of the odd resolution).
