Bug Description

Hello friends. On elementary OS it seems as if there is no auto mount. On pretty much every other Linux distro and operating system, when you insert an SD camera card or a USB drive, it auto mounts, giving the user the ability to manage the device right away. On elementary OS, you must mount the device first. This is admittedly easy (open file manager - click to mount - exit - open shotwell/music/whatever - use device), but with elementary's target being a more simplistic approach, it actually works in reverse of that philosophy. Considering, do I dare say, at least 99% of users inserting a USB drive or SD card are doing so to use it right then and there, it suggests that auto mount being enabled would make sense.

I never really gave the lack of auto mount much thought despite my initial confusion with it, but after seeing (I'm not exaggerating) every single user out of the 12-15 users I put on elementary OS struggle with that, I figured it was worth mentioning as it does indeed pose a degree of confusion to newer users.

Thanks for your time!

@bohu and anyone else who wants to write +1: don't write it. It adds unnecessary text to read and all subscribers are notified for no reason. Just mark this bug as affecting you.

@JaSauders: you may consider adding usbmount package to description as a workaround. It isn't perfect, but might help someone.

Grzegorz - thanks for the suggestion, but I did try it. As you mentioned it was far from perfect, so I uninstalled it. I think the Ubuntu/Mint/everyotherdistroI'veused/etc way of handling automount is the best way to go about it. Why it was stripped from a distro based on Ubuntu is hard to fathom. Insert device, ask what you want to do (check remember if you wish), genius.

Unfortunately this problem will probably be enough of an issue for me to go back to Linux Mint.
I will continue to use your product for a while and hope a workaround is near.

Thanks.

Since #1094669 was closed saying the problem shouldn't be fixed using the Files application, this should no longer be considered a duplicate. Additionally, this really needs some attention, it's been open almost 5 years. Glaring usability flaws like this are why it's impossible to recommend ElementaryOS to regular computer users despite the positive first impression.
