.gitattributes not used

Bug Description

It would be nice if .gitattributes were respected for functionality like write_tree_diff. This would allow diffing binary files for a "quick look" for differences between, say, the EXIF of two versions of an image.

The main drawback would be having to subprocess.call any command requested, after doing the globbing that #504445 would require.
