First character as dot/period turns box black

Tried under ubuntu 10.10 and openSuse 11.3
I've attached a picture of what I see after typing the period.
Once the box turns black it seems to just be a text box, although I can <Esc> back to the initial screen

So, this behaviour is by design - hitting ‘.’ enters “text mode”, where
you can just enter text without it being matched to an item. By the
way, you can change the keyboard shortcut for this in the Preferences
dialog.

The reason I'm setting this as incomplete rather than invalid is that it
would appear that it can be confusing :).

Would some text in that box indicating that you can type in (and then
press <tab>) have been sufficient for you to understand what was going
on?

Yeah, I think a bit of text would help, even if it disappears once I start typing. I'm no designer though, so I'll leave the UI to you ;)

In standard initial state it writes "Type to search" - something simillar would be nice maybe. Maybe it should mention that you can cancel the mode with "ESC" or continue with "Tab".
