No actions load at startup; requires restart

Bug Description

Often (perhaps 80% of the time), GNOME Do (0.8.2) will not load any actions on startup.
The window appears; I begin typing a command, and there is no auto-complete. Moreover, if I type the first command outright, no secondary command becomes available.

In order to resolve this, I need to selectively kill all Do.exe and gnome-do processes.
Only then, and after a restart, do my actions become available.

It appears that I can sometimes avert this by:
a) Pressing Esc the moment Do loads and becomes visible;
b) Waiting a while after startup to use any Do actions. However, if I attempt to use an action and it fails, they will never subsequently load without restart.

Additionally, when this happens, Do tends to snag two CPUs at 100% utilization.

I'm pretty sure you're seeing bug #395190, which is fixed in 0.8.3. Could you update to this version (or, rather 0.8.3.1) and retest?

I am using Gnome-Do 0.8.3.1 on Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10 and I get this same problem. In order to get any of the actions to work, I have to uncheck ALL of my plugins, close the preferences window, then it will work again. What is causing this very, very annoying problem and how do I fix it? Note: the CPU problem only happens sometimes.

you don't have to uncheck all of your plugins. Simply open and close the preferences window and the "Universe" will reload.

I have the same behavior on gnome-do 0.8.3.1+dfsg-0~9.10 from the ppa.

The bug appears just sometimes, and I can't give more informations on why. It seams like the system has not completely started up, and all "actions" arent loaded.

Nevermind, getting it in 0.8.3.1 as well.
Seems to show up after using Do for several sessions.
Bummer.

I can confirm this as well, Ubuntu 10.04, x84, gnome-do 0.8.3.1. It's been happening for a while now, it seems, I just finally got around to looking it up. Killing gnome-do and restarting it appears to clear the problem up.

I'm tempted to say that this bug appears sometimes after waking from sleep, but I'm not entirely sure. I'll keep an eye out.

Same here. How to enable debug on startup?

Hey guys, also getting this on Ubuntu 10.10 (x64) using 0.8.3.1 from a cold boot.

Do starts up ok, but there's no auto-complete. Quitting (right-click on the Panel icon) and starting it again seems to work ok. This *was* working fine before, unfortunately I can't pin-point when this started to play up...

I'm getting the exact same error. I also have 0.8.3.1, from the repositories in ubuntu. Never had the problem with 10.04, it only started happening with the upgrade to 10.10. Any chance of seeing it solved? Do you need any info from this side of the keyboard?
Cheers.

In my Startup applications I have placed

sh -c 'exec gnome-do --debug > /tmp/gnome-do.log 2>&1'

instead of the default for executing gnome-do when you log in. The result is that if gnome-do fails to load the actions, this log should show something about the problem.

After adding this, I have not been able to reproduce the problem, so I guess this is probably a race condition somewhere.

I have the same problem. After simply shutting down gnome-do and starting it again everything seems to work.

Using Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome-do 0.8.3.1

I've had the luck of encoutering this bug with the above mentioned debug logging enabled. I have not got the time to dig through the log at the moment, but it may help to pinpoint the bug.

I am also having this issue for some time. I added debug logging and will send log report when it happens again. I can confirm that killing gnome-do and restarting it fixes the problem when it happens.

add this following command to be your startup application:

sh -c 'sleep 10 && gnome-do'

I think this might be fixed in 0.8.4? There's certainly a universe-updating fix in there.

Is there an installable maverick package somewhere? As this is obviously a race condition or other timing issue, I will have to keep running gnome-do under observation for quite some time and I would like to have a package for that.

I've solved my problem by replacing gnome-do with synapse, which works much better.
