Bug Description

I'm running Avant Window Navigator using Metacity as composite manager. If I launch Gnome Do, type something, then press the Up/Down cursor keys, the AWN bar will vanish and re-appear as I press Up or Down. Also, the drop-down window for Gnome Do no longer appears.

Kill AWN and tell me if this still happens. I have a hunch that it has
nothing to Do with AWN. Or maybe Do and AWN are somehow competing for focus?
We've seen problems with Metacity's compositor in the past.

I think you are correct about competing for focus. If I kill AWN and restart it, it seems to work better.

But Do does seem very slow to 'kick in' after login. It takes a minute or two before it will even appear. Again, I have to kill AWN first. Then I find starting an app, using ALT-TAB, then Do will appear. Not sure of an exact sequence yet.

Start Do (fresh start -- be sure to quit it first) from a terminal and tell
me if it takes a minute to start:

$ gnome-do

It seems to start quickly, but I think the problem is with it actually appearing. When I restart it, it appears. I then press Escape, and then <Super>Space to invoke it but it doesn't appear. I have found that by pressing the Up or Down cursor key repeatedly (after entering text), it will appear after a few seconds.

Very strange. Can you reproduce all of this strange behavior using another
compositor, like compiz?

It doesn't happen with Compiz. However, I cannot use Compiz at the moment because the nVidia driver causes black flashes (very annoying too) which I don't get with Metacity.

I'm not suggesting that you use compiz, I'm suggesting that this is a
Metacity bug.

I'm running Intrepid with 2.6.27-9-generic kernel, metacity compositing manager, nVidia GeForce 7950GTX using nv driver, and Gnome-Do from Ubuntu's repo version 0.6.1.0, and AWN 0.3.1 ppa.

So far, no problems.

Hello,

I have a similar problem, probably the same origin.
Problem description:
Gnome-Do and AWN start correctly. When I click on the Gnome-Do icon in the notification area, it will pop-up the gnome-do interface. I can then exit it and call it back several times without any problem (using escape key and the gnome-do summon shortcut).
But after some time (and I did not manage to reproduce a set of action leeding to this state yet, even if I have the feeling that this is linked with AWN taking the focus at some point) the gnome-do shortcut either stop doing anything (i.e. gnome-do does not appear and nothing else seems to happen) or trigger the visibility of AWN.

Configuration:
Intrepid with kernel: 2.6.27-9-generic
metacity with composition enabled
ati graphic card with F/OSS driver

If you need more information, just let me know it and I'll try to retrieve it.

Hi everyone,
I had the same problem, running AWN with metacity. I can not use Compiz with dual monitor and a Intel video card. :( (Dell Latitude D620). To "solve" this problem, I have to click on the panel (to focus it) then execute my shortcut to Gnome Do and it works fine....

Configuration:
2.6.24-24-generic
metacity with composition enabled
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller

Hi everyone,

same problem on a VirtualBox machine V2.2.4, Ubuntu 9.04 + guest additions
this Problems on VirtualBox should be reproducible for anyone, since it is a Virtual machine.

I have the problem with the slow launching, though I am using Compiz with a Nvidia card with driver 180.
